I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!

This ain’t your grandma’s medical alarm

We all remember the commercial from the late 1980s with the helpless senior who had fallen and was unable to get up. The bad acting and memorable line of “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”® made it a catchphrase that has remained in popular culture, including memes, songs, and remakes of the original commercial.

A lot has changed since the 80s, and Citywide Alarm has upped the game on personal emergency response systems (PERS). The medical systems come in three different packages to meet the needs of you and your loved one.

Medical Systems

The “Safe Medical System” is ideal for home use and includes patented two-way voice technology by LogicMark. The small, classic-styled pendant is worn around the neck for easy access, even when in bed or after a fall.

The “Safer Medical System” includes the two-way voice system in the pendant as well as an integrated GPS for use while traveling. This system is also an excellent choice for families of Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia patients, who may wander from home.

The “Safest Medical System” includes all of the features of the first two packages, but offers fall detection technology to alert you and the medical authorities in the case of a fall, even if your loved one does not press the PERS pendant button.

Why is fall detection important?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 35% of Americans older than 65 and 50% of those age 75 and older are prone to falls. Without the necessary, immediate assistance, falls could lead to serious injury or even death. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that falls lead to 800,000 hospitalizations each year.

Falls aren’t the only emergency that warrants assistance. Heart attacks, strokes, coughing seizures, and panic attacks could all require assistance which may be otherwise difficult to receive without a personal medical alarm. However, falls are the most common emergency scenario, simply because they are often the result of other conditions where one may lose muscle control, consciousness, or even one’s balance.

Wellness Feature

Citywide Alarms medical alarm systems offer wellness features to help watch over a loved one who is living alone. Wellness from Alarm.com is an added security measure which involves small sensors placed throughout the home, communicating with the customer’s security system. The feature offers real-time notifications when a loved one is:

  • Up and About
  • Away from Bed
  • Safe Inside
  • Having a Personal Emergency

Additionally, you will receive status updates on your mobile device if you have the Alarm.com app installed and connected.

Peace of Mind

Today’s modern personal emergency response systems have come a long way since your grandma’s medical alert pendant. With connections to your alarm system and your smartphone, you’ll be sure to know exactly what is going on, exactly when it occurs. And just like before, the emergency medical services will also be notified immediately and on their way to help your loved one, whether his or her situation is a fall or any other emergency.
